Official 2026 Transfer Portal Windows
For the 2026 season, the NCAA Division I Council established a 15-day notification-of-transfer window for basketball student-athletes. This window officially opens the day after the conclusion of the respective NCAA championship game. For Men’s Basketball, the portal was open from April 7, 2026, to April 21, 2026. For Women’s Basketball, the window ran from April 6, 2026, to April 20, 2026. These dates are strictly enforced, and athletes must notify their compliance office to initiate the process within these designated timeframes.
Key Stats
Understanding the timeline is critical for maintaining eligibility and maximizing your recruitment opportunities.
What This Means For You
Entering the transfer portal is a major career decision that requires preparation. With only 15 days to make your move, you cannot afford to be unprepared. Coaches are looking for immediate impact players, and they will evaluate your recent game film, academic standing, and statistical performance the moment your name appears in the database. If your profile is not optimized, you risk being overlooked by top-tier programs.

Navigating Coaching Changes
The NCAA provides a specific exception for student-athletes affected by head coaching changes. If a head coach leaves a program, a 15-day transfer window opens for affected athletes five days after the new head coach is hired or publicly announced. This provides a vital safety net for players whose development plans may have shifted due to staff turnover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter the transfer portal outside of the 15-day window?
Generally, no. You must enter during the sport-specific window unless you qualify for an exception, such as a head coaching change or specific medical circumstances.
How do I officially enter the transfer portal?
You must provide written notification to your current school's compliance office. They are then required to enter your name into the NCAA database within 48 hours.
Does being in the portal guarantee a scholarship offer?
No. Entering the portal simply grants other coaches permission to contact you. It does not guarantee interest or scholarship offers from other institutions.
