Understanding the 2026 Transfer Window
For the 2026 season, the NCAA Division I Council implemented a significant shift in the transfer portal timeline for women's basketball. The official notification-of-transfer window for women's basketball opened on April 6, 2026, and remained open for a 15-day period, closing on April 20, 2026 [1, 2, 10]. This change was designed to ensure that the transfer process does not distract from the NCAA Tournament, as the window now officially begins the day after the national championship game [3, 9, 10].
It is critical for student-athletes to understand that while you must enter the portal during this 15-day window to be eligible for a transfer, there is no deadline for committing to a new school once you have officially entered [9, 10]. If you are considering a move, your preparation must begin well before the window opens to ensure your academic and athletic profile is ready for immediate review by coaching staffs [4].

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter the transfer portal outside of the 15-day window?
Generally, no. For Division I women's basketball, you must enter during the designated 15-day window (April 6–20, 2026). Exceptions may exist for head coaching changes, which trigger a separate 15-day window [3, 9].
Does entering the portal guarantee I will get a scholarship?
No. Entering the portal simply grants you permission to be contacted by other coaches. It does not guarantee an offer or a scholarship, which is why having a strong, AI-optimized profile is vital [4].
What happens if I enter the portal but don't find a new school?
You are not required to transfer once you enter the portal. However, your current school is not obligated to keep you on the roster or maintain your scholarship, so it is a high-stakes decision that should be discussed with your compliance office [4].
