How Much Is a Transfer Portal Quarterback Worth?
In today's college football recruiting economy, quarterback transfer portal market value ranges from $750,000 for rotational or developmental FBS signal-callers to well over $3.5 million to $5.0 million for elite Power 4 starters, as reported in CBS Sports analysis of transfer portal pricing surges. Market data indicates that average starting quarterbacks in tier-one conferences command between $1.5 million and $2.5 million annually from collective revenue-sharing and marketing agreements, according to CBS Sports. Proven starters who enter the portal can see bidding wars surge past $4 million per year, as highlighted by On3 reporting on the quarterback portal market.
Transfer market value is not an arbitrary figure. It is heavily dictated by supply and demand, remaining collegiate eligibility, offensive scheme fit, proven passing efficiency, and team roster composition. Under updated NCAA scholarship frameworks expanded beyond the historical 85-scholarship cap, quarterback rooms are tightly engineered, making verified game reps and high-leverage passing upside exponentially more valuable than raw potential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I talk to college coaches before entering the NCAA transfer portal?
No. Under NCAA Bylaws, coaches from other institutions are strictly prohibited from communicating directly or indirectly with prospective student-athletes prior to their official activation in the transfer portal. Unsanctioned contact is considered tampering and risks eligibility sanctions.
Does entering the transfer portal guarantee a quarterback NIL deal or scholarship?
No. Entering the portal does not guarantee a roster spot, scholarship, or collective contract. Furthermore, entering gives your current university the legal right to revoke or non-renew your existing athletic scholarship.
How do FCS and Division II quarterback transfer values compare?
FCS and Division II quarterbacks entering the portal generally capture lower baseline collective guarantees (typically $5,000 to $50,000 at lower tiers). However, proven FCS starters jumping to FBS programs routinely command $250,000 to $800,000 depending on passing efficiency and program fit.
