2026 Texas Football Roster Capacity & Open Spots
For the 2026 cycle, the Texas Longhorns football program has approximately 25 to 30 open roster spots, depending on NFL early departures and transfer portal volume. With the NCAA adopting the House settlement model that establishes a hard 105-player roster limit (and eliminates the old 85-scholarship cap by allowing up to 105 full or partial scholarships), head coach Steve Sarkisian and General Manager Brandon Harris must manage strict overall headcounts rather than just scholarship counters.
Historically, elite FBS powerhouses experience an annual roster turnover rate of 20% to 30% due to graduating seniors, players entering the NFL Draft, and out-transfers. For Texas, filling these ~25–30 open spots involves a delicate balancing act between elite high school commitments (such as top prospects like DB John Meredith III and QB Dia Bell) and high-impact veterans from the NCAA transfer portal.
