How to Calculate High School Athletic Academic Eligibility
To qualify for college competition, high school student-athletes must meet strict academic thresholds determined by the NCAA Eligibility Center and NAIA. For NCAA Division I competition, an athlete must achieve a minimum 2.300 core-course GPA across 16 approved core courses and successfully complete 10 of those 16 core courses prior to the start of their seventh semester (the start of their senior year). For Division II, athletes need a minimum 2.200 core-course GPA. NCAA Division III institutions do not enforce centralized Eligibility Center minimums, relying instead on each individual institution's academic admissions standards.
Calculating an athlete's core GPA requires isolating only approved coursework in English, math (Algebra I or higher), natural/physical science, social science, and additional academic electives. Cumulative high school transcript GPAs are rarely identical to NCAA core GPAs because physical education, health, remedial electives, and vocational courses are excluded from quality point calculations.
